A New Wardrobe the Vintage Way

Well, not quite but it still gives me a little thrill to find bits and pieces to add to my wardrobe in charity shops or at car boot sales and the like.

Here are a few things I've found on my travels of the last few weeks. I wouldn't say they were all as cheap as chips but I still consider them inexpensive especially compared with buying new. And of course, it's highly unlikely you'll bump into anyone else wearing/carrying the same item and that's priceless!

(like new, need breaking in!)

I know the last two aren't wardrobe related but I don't buy much for the house these days (honest) so I thought I'd throw them in. I find lots of tins and never keep them but I really liked something about this one. Maybe it's because the toffee was made at the Garden Toffery!
And the little stool is something I've been after for a while for using in Mozzie. Admittedly, I haven't got very far down the list of things I want but most will turn up eventually!

I've been playing about with layouts etc...on here but I'm not happy with it. Plus, some text has disappeared from the sidebar although it's there in the admin! Back to the drawing board....

Almost forgot, there's new stock on the website right now.

Hacked off

Yes, I'm still here, that little thing called life getting in the way again, tut tut. Hopefully, more regular blogging will resume shortly. Well, as regular as I can make it.

Just a quickie to show you a little bargain that I took a chance with and won *punches air*.

I found this tweed jacket in a charity shop about two years ago, for the rather large (in my opinion!) price of seven new pounds. But it is actually a proper hacking jacket made by the english company Mears for the country-tweedy-riding-hunting type set. I admit this bothered me a lot and I hummed and haa-ed in the shop for yonks before deciding that what the heck, it's just a jacket. I  can't hold it responsible for what it may have seen if you follow my point and drift?

And it has obviously been well used over the years but with plenty of life left in it...good old tweed!
It has a rather lovely shape with the one split up the back (for sitting atop horsey)  slanted pockets and a flattering nipped in waist. Miracle of miracles, the sleeves also fit me perfectly which never happens, except with vintage garments. It had a little pilling, nothing I couldn't 'shave' off and the elbows are a tad stretched out, I would guess from always being worn with the elbows bent, holding onto the reins. But otherwise it seemed in great condition.

It also has a rather nice blue/brown mix. So, I wore it a couple of times and then I suddenly saw something I hadn't before. There seemed to be some pale brown stains which were only apparent in certain light. And if I was squinting. So, it went back in the wardrobe and there it has hung ever since...until a couple of weeks ago when having a bit of a purge I came across it once again. Well, it was either send it back to the CS or chuck it in the washing machine and hope for the best. So that's what I did! But not before spraying it with nasty old stain remover (in for a penny etc...) I popped it in on a wool cycle and crossed my fingers. An hour later out it came, smelling a lot sweeter for a start! And seemingly the same size as when it went in. I hung it on a hanger to dry and it wasn't even creased!

Just to prove I am a real person! Although I'm obviously a wonky person too. I've just realised this is actually not a good picture at all. I look very 'hippy'. I'll blame that on the thick cable dress I'm wearing. The jacket fits very well, honest!

Was it worth it? Some of the stains have disappeared and the others are a lot paler. I think I can only see them now because I know where they are.

Moral of this story: never trust a charity shop for a start, trust your own eyes. I like to think I check everything over very thoroughly but I still cock up sometimes. I was a bit peeved as it was bought in the Lake District, otherwise I'd have taken it back. The things I've seen on CS clothes and I'm sure you have too...hair (human and animal) food, vomit etc...There was a time when they cleaned everything before it hit the rails, do they not do that now? Anyhow, it turned out alright in the end. By the way, please don't go chucking all your garments, vintage or otherwise in the washing machine will you? And if you do, don't blame me if it all goes horribly wrong! After all, I had nothing to lose in this instance.

You can now find This Vintage Life on Facebook. There's something I thought I'd never do! Still finding my feet at the moment, I think I need a small child to hold my hand. It would be nice if you would come and say hello, don't leave me all my own over there please! Link via badge on sidebar, haven't worked out a url link yet, sigh....

A little bit of Winter cheer

Urghhh, the weather here is chilly, gloomy, wet...basically the sort of weather that makes you want to do a big fat nothing!
There's nothing wrong with that of course. Soon, the weather will turn, the trees will be in bud and the plants will burst forth from the ground. Yes, Spring will have sprung and we can look forward to longer days and warmer weather. We have to find little ways to amuse and cheer ourselves until then though.

Simple things can make the dark, wintry days seem less dreary can't they? And they don't all have to cost a lot...

Short days and bad weather = more time to read, hurrah!

I don't feel the least bit guilty about making mini cheese scones to eat with my soup

We're enjoying simple, comforting food like Baked Eggs and Spinach.
This isn't my effort, I keep forgetting to take a picture!  Source. The recipe is almost the same. The cheese is my addition.

{Tip a tin of chopped tomatoes into an ovenproof dish, mix in some seasoning and chilli flakes/powder, pour a kettle of boiling water over enough fresh spinach for two, drain, mix with tomatoes, make four small wells in the top and break an egg into each, grate over some mature cheese and bake at 200 degrees for 15 - 20 mins until everything is hot, cheese is browned and eggs are cooked to your liking. Don't forget the crusty bread. Yum!}

Experiencing that little thrill when the postman knocks at my door with (yet another, oops!) parcel of goodies.

Finally being able to wear one of my best CS bargains ever. It's been too mild thus far for cashmere. Yes, cashmere! And vintage Pringle for Harrods at that! (It looks a lot better on I can assure you!)
My little Christmas present looks quite at home on it. Thanks hubby!

The best thing about this generally mild and snow-free Winter for us is that we've been able to keep on motoring in Morris!

Every mile, a smile!

And when one motors in Morris, one has to dress appropriately don't yer know!

Stuff

I like stuff. I do. Especially useless stuff. It's an affliction and I fear it's terminal. Here's some of the latest stuff to find it's way home with me.

Who was the Victorian lady who wore this I wonder? Somewhat tatty, completely useless but pretty and delicate and worth saving.

I've been looking for one of these teensy little child sized baskets for ages. And then Mr TVL spots this on a high shelf in a charity shop for the grand sum of £1.95!! I wish that happened every day!
I have oodles of these fab crochet covered hangers. Bought to sell but...well, you know the rest. I may be persuaded to add a few to the website soon. Maybe.

I love the little illustrations in the manual of a helpful young  lady pointing out things alongside the instructions. Her outfit very nicely dates it, I think.
Not all stuff is useless of course. While doing a bit of soy-fing I spotted this great vintagey fairisle cardi at Matalan of all places. Not a shop I frequent I admit, but this was too cute to miss.
 Look, it's got puffy sleeves!
Yes, I like stuff. And the great thing is, there's always more where that came from!

Ding Ding! All aboard!

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend... and we have another to come!

We had an unusually packed time {for us} catching up on chores {yuk} as well as lots of cycling, a bit of car booting and on Saturday we celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary with a wonderful meal here. I also received this little beauty from my husband. Sometimes, he can take a hint ;-)

This was followed on Sunday with a day out at Crich Tramway Museum's 1940's event.

This called for top to toe 1940's togs of course.

{ No, this isn't me although I wouldn't mind her 'garden!' }

I got to wear these sandals that my wonderful husband treated me to recently and only when I got home did I realise that everything I had on was american in origin. These lovely sandals were from Sears.

We had a great time, so much so that I now have a husband who wants his own vintage wardrobe! Speaking of which there were lots of lovely vintage shopping opportunities. I could have gone a bit mad with all the wonderful clothes for sale but I only came away with one dress.

Crich have another 40's weekend in August if you're interested in going. I hadn't visited since I was very small so it was nice to be reminded what a great place it is for a visit and there is of course so much more than the last time I was there. It really does transport you back to another time. And you can have as many tram rides as you like!

Here are a few more pics which I've made suitably vintage looking with my new toy!

We both love vintage cars so spent quite a lot of time drooling over these...
