Spring greens

I don't know about where you are but the weather is distinctly gloomy in my neck of the woods at the moment and has been for days. It's wet and cold and the sky looks like it's fallen in. Not exactly Spring-like!

Still, the bulbs are well on their way up in the garden, although not as far on as these that Mr TVL kindly bought for me when he popped out for a pint of milk.

They are currently cheering up my kitchen and hallway. We recently found ourselves re-decorating the hallway after replacing our sofa and chair. The old sofa was so big we had trouble getting it out of the living room and ended up scraping the wallpaper and catching the woodwork in several places while trying to manoeuvre it through the doorway and down the hall.  My intention was certainly not to re-do the whole lot but the yellow and terracotta colour scheme was looking tired and a bit dingy so although I was forced in to it I'm kind of glad really as it did need freshening up.

The hallway is one 'room' I've always struggled a bit with. It's a very narrow L-shape, typical of a bungalow of this era and with very little natural light. We had new doors hung when we moved in (yes, the Sapele ones had to go!) and we had half glazed ones where we could (not a good idea for the bathroom obviously...) but still, most of the time it's gloomy. Hence, the yellow although I don't think it really helped much.
So this time I was going to paint the whole lot white but when it came to buying the paint I chickened out! Although I love the idea of all white walls I find them a bit scary at the same time.
So I compromised with Antique White on the Anaglypta and a soft green I mixed myself above the dado.

All 37 inches of it!

While I was at it, I took the opportunity to *cough* tone down the 'stuff' and have only put back...wait for it...ONE mirror and TWO pictures!

I used to have this Barbola mirror in the bedroom (along with about three others...) until IT was purged a while ago too. It's too pretty to be stuck up in the loft and I thought the pinky-red roses would look lovely against the green. I have to admit, I'm moving slightly away from the florals; they won't disappear altogether but I'm trying to mix some other things in there now.

I'm still undecided about whether to keep the Anglepoise lamp here or swap it for something with a fabric shade. I'm also framing a picture that I may replace the large floral print with on the opposite wall and it's NOT flowers. Quelle horreur!! But otherwise job done. And to say I had no intention of doing it I'm actually quite pleased with how it turned out. Now, I really have to turn my attentions to the bathroom...
As I was doing this post I realised I should have shown a 'before' pic but oddly I could only find one on my computer which I'm sure can't be right but here it is anyway. Lots of cottage prints, family portraits and other assorted pictures on every portion of wall space!

In other news! If you've recently visited the website you may have noticed we've had a bit of a facelift. That's all I'm going to say about that. Moving on...

February marked the sixth anniversary?/birthday? of This Vintage Life. How time does fly. That's quite a long time and having given a lot of thought generally to things over the winter I've decided that there will be no more big uploads of stock, at least for the forseeable future anyway. I'll be adding one or two items weekly or as and when I acquire something interesting.

Therefore I won't be sending out New Stock emails to the mailing list anymore. I think you'd soon get fed up if I dropped you an email whenever I added one item to the site! So, I'm going to add an update to Facebook every time there's a new product added as it's quicker and simpler that way.

I'll try and mention it on the blog too although that may just be a link in the sidebar. I might add something to the home page of the website too so if you drop in regularly, you should know that way. So please, if you want to be kept updated about stock you'll need to visit us on Facebook and 'like' us or whatever it is you have to do to get updates (I'm so un-techie!!)

Vintage Pop-Up Shop

I'm having a big ol' clearout and you're invited! We're calling it the Vintage Pop-Up shop just because it sounds better than Clearance Sale or something equally boring. If you are interested in coming and dragging along some poor unsuspecting mates/family/stangers off the street, please email deb@thisvintagelife.com for address and directions (...to my garden, hence why I'm not splashing the venue all over the internet) By the way, we are in the back of beyond on the east coast of Lincolnshire so not very accessible for most I know but if you do trip along we'll be mighty glad to see you and very appreciative, honest. It's over two days the weekend of the 6th and 7th of October and lordy, I hope the weather improves by then otherwise we'll all be squeezed into my kitchen. We have a gazebo but it'll take off if the wind and rain is anything like today. There'll be a wide range of vintage, you know the sort of thing ~ linens, pictures, china, kitchenalia, books, furniture, clothing, accessories etc...etc... I am at saturation point and need to 'thin' so I can buy more, ha! So, hope to see you then and er, bring cash! Ooh, I've just managed to insert this...progress!

New Arrivals at This Vintage Life...

Hello! I have added new stock to the shop today including a couple of things to make wash day more tolerable! I am still having problems with Blogger and to be honest, my life's too short to spend any more time trying to fathom it out so I guess that means no more posts from me in the forseeable future. I can't add images which makes for very boring posts I think you'll agree? So until the next upload, ttfn.

New Arrivals at This Vintage Life...

There's a lack of posting at the mo due to Blogger playing up so I hope this manages to get out there!
I just wanted to say that there's new stock in the shop right now and hopefully normal blogging will resume as soon as I've discovered what the problem is. That always helps! I suspect it's this Chrome thingamajig I've HAD to install. Shouldn't it be easier if one Google product is working with another....? If anyone's had the same problem and sorted it out, please let me know how!

New Arrivals at This Vintage Life

The virtual shelves have just been heavily replenished in the shop with the usual homewares but also a quantity of vintage clothing.
I decided I'd better do something about selling them as the pile was increasing and space is always at a premium here at TVL Towers!
Although I don't go out specifically to buy vintage clothing to sell on, I just can't help falling over things sometimes (not literally) and my magpie/bargain hunting instincts just won't let me leave them behind. So, I hope you find something you like or maybe you know someone who likes vintage clothing and you can point them in the right direction....here!

As I hope you know by now, the prices are reasonable and the quality good. As usual, I've tried to give as much detail as possible regarding the garment and particularly the sizing but any questions, just give me a shout.

This Vintage Life has also just reached a landmark birthday...we are FIVE! Thanks to all those people who visit and purchase regularly; I wouldn't be here without you.

This upload has taken a little longer than I intended due to our (yes, I'm blaming Mr. TVL as well) decision to swap from a desktop to a laptop. Arghhhh! What was I thinking? I feel like I've lost my security blanket. I am not someone who likes change. But in the last few weeks I've had to contend with a new mail system and get to grips with Windows 7....come back XP!!
All that and transferring everything over (why do we keep such utter rubbish on our computers? Or is it just me?) has meant a delay in new stock in the shop.

And just to elicit a tad more sympathy, I've also had a bad cold and terrible weather not fit for taking photographs, *cough* *sniff* etc....

Never mind, it's the first day of March tomorrow and the days are stretching so things aren't so bad!
(Oh,and  some of our Easter products are on the April cover of Homes and Antiques magazine, which is nice)

For the love of Granny

Coo, it's been a while. Time just runs away with you sometimes!

So. During the time of This Vintage Life one of the items that has remained consistently popular is the crocheted blanket, afghan, granny squares; call it what you will.
They always sell fairly swiftly and more than anything else, they're the item I get most requests for.
So just recently when sorting and organising my pictures for the website (we all have to do a bit of housekeeping from time to time, don't we?) I realised just how many 'grannies' have passed through my hands in four and a half years. And it's a LOT!

About the same time, I also had an email from a customer in Australia (Hello, Lynn!) who attached a lovely photograph of her cat reclining on the blanket she had just purchased from the other side of the world!

The funny thing is I go over them with a fine tooth comb to make sure they are hair and fluff free before I buy them...ho hum! Sadly, the picture has disappeared from my file so I can't share it here.

Anyhoo, here's a bit of granny eye candy. And this is by no means all of them!

Granny squares are very versatile....
